Every year, The Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited offers a comprehensive half-day fly fishing clinic for young men and women, ages 10 to 15. The clinic is designed for the beginning fly fisher and provides basic instruction in all phases of fly fishing including fly casting, knot tying, insect identification, and conservation. Certified instructors and mentors work with students to provide individual instruction and answer questions. Each student receives a selection of great fly fishing gear too!

Normally held in the Spring, the clinic is limited to 36 students and is offered at a nominal cost.

Students are provided all necessary equipment but are encouraged to bring weather appropriate outdoor clothing, a brimmed hat, sunglasses or prescription glasses (mandatory safety item), insect repellent, and sunscreen.

Students who prefer to use their own fly rod may do so. No hooks will be used on the line; this is an instructional day. All instructors are eager to teach the art of fly fishing and pass along their interest in conservation, so bring lots of enthusiasm to class.

Students who have previously attended this clinic are not eligible to attend again.

For more information, contact our Education Chair at education@ucctu.org.

The stations include the following:

The history of the Chattahoochee and why the river needs to be protected and preserved. Receive a short course on the river's 'bugs' that are imitated as 'flies' – used to catch trout and other aquatic species. You'll also hear about and view a stream display model designed to show both a healthy river and one that's very polluted.

Before you begin your fly fishing adventure you'll need to know the basic knots used to secure your fly to the tippet and tippet to the line and line to the backing. Sounds complicated? It really isn't. Come and learn the basic knots to get started fishing.

Once you've mastered the fine art of fly fishing, you'll want to start tying your own flies. There are thousands of different fly patterns out there, but you really only need to know 10 or so to get out on the river and fish. It's a great hobby and a lot of fun.

Work with certified instructors and fly fishing guides to learn the gentle art of fly casting.

Our sponsor, Alpharetta Outfitters, will have a tent set up and experts on hand to guide you in what gear you'll need to get out on the river. From waders to boots to vests and
nippers the experts at AO will help you put together a great shopping list. Ask questions and learn from the pros.
