Embrace a Stream
In October 2019, Trout Unlimited's Embrace a Stream nominating committee selected the Chattahoochee River Wild Trout Improvement Project as a 2019 Embrace A Stream grant recipient.
Embrace A Stream (EAS) is a matching grant program administered by TU that awards funds to TU chapters and councils for coldwater fisheries conservation.
Our focus is on Crayfish Creek, a heavily impaired tributary of the Chattahoochee River. Streambank erosion and lack of riparian canopy cover are degrading its water quality which is within reach of the spawning habitat for wild brown trout in the river. To ensure the river remains a productive coldwater fishery and healthy source of drinking water, the Chattahoochee River Wild Trout Improvement Project is focusing on improving water quality and habitat along the creek by restoring native riparian vegetation, removing non-native species, stabilizing eroded streambanks, and removing non-native debris which is altering stream hydrology and contributing to erosion issues.
The Project team includes The Upper Chattahoochee Chapter TU, Oconee River Chapter TU, University of Georgia 5 Rivers Club, Chattahoochee Parks Conservancy, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, CRNRA NPS, UGA Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, River Through Atlanta, Chattahoochee River Keeper and the Georgia Council of Trout Unlimited.
